As Government tries to woo migrant KPs for return, non-migrants allege apathy | | | Mudasir Tariq SRINAGAR, Aug 28: At a time when government is making every effort to bring back migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the valley, the non-migrant Pandits blame the authorities for backtracking from its promises to rehabilitate the families who remained committed to valley over the years despite all odds. An association of non-migrant KPs under the banner Hindu Welfare Society Kashmir (HWSK) blames government's apathy to rehabilitate them. "Government makes tall claims to bring back migrant Kashmiri Pandits. But what about us, we live as migrants within the valley. We are being deprived from the basic amenities. We requested the government for our rehabilitation but till date nothing has been done in this regard," said Chuni Lal Bhat, Public Secretary and Spokesperson HWSK. Chuni Lal held that a file of rehabilitation of non-migrant Pandits is in the Relief Commissioner's office and every kind of verification has been completed and blame the lackadaisical approach of the government to stay put the file. "A complete verification of 51 families have been done for the rehabilitation process at Sheikhpora Budgam, the verification has been done by both the CID officials and IGP Kashmir under the file no KZ/CS/V-2 (2011/3878-79) Dated 17/03/2012 and a copy of it has been sent to Relief Commissioner Jammu on 17-09-2012, I don't understand the reason why they are not proceeding," said Chuni Lal. Pertinently Sheikhpora rehabilitation center was established a few years back for non-migrant Pandits, where some 31 families were rehabilitated from the district Budgam, but those from the Srinagar were kept aloof. "At Sheikhpora there is sufficient space to accommodate us, but they rehabilitated locals from Budgam and our file of rehabilitation was not considered," said Chuni Lal. After a mass migration forced almost three lakh Kashmiri Pandits to leave when the first wave of militancy erupted 25 years ago there were several families that stay back. Many of these families migrated towards the summer capital because of security reasons and live here in rented houses. These Pandits have been promised of rehabilitation as all of them have lost their ancestral home and property. "There are some 70 families that migrated from different districts of Kashmir and live in Srinagar. They pay huge amounts of rent and they are having a miserable life. We had requested government to rehabilitate these families so that they can have a breath of life but nothing has been done till date," said Chuni Lal. In the month of July HWSK held several protests in Lal Chowk to press their demands to but to no avail as the authorities continue to be in deep slumber. "We have lost almost everything, our homes have been burnt down, our kins were killed, and still we remained here. Are we not Kashmiri's? We should be rehabilitated on priority basis. We request government to look at our problems and rehabilitate us as soon as possible," said Chuni Lal. |
