Moderates not interested, shortage of funds big issue | Baffled Geelani calls for unity | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 28: The BJP led NDA government taking a tough stand over Kashmir has created ripples in the separatist camp in the Valley. Baffled by the decision of the Indian government to call off the Foreign Secretary level talks with Pakistan the Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani has appealed all the separatist groups to unite for what he called "countering the policies" of the Modi government. Pertinently, Geelani had been averse to unity among the separatists for the past so many years. On many occasions during these years he (Geelani) has leveled serious allegations against all the moderate leaders, who tried to hold talks with Central government. A top police official while talking to Early Times said, "We are studying the Geelani's offer to ascertain why he is seeking unity among the separatist ranks. There can be many reasons for Geelani softening his stand. One of the major reason is that they are losing significance," the officer added. He said, "Since the day new government has taken over the reins in Delhi security agencies have been asked to act tough against the separatists. Secondly we have cracked on the channels through which separatist used to get money from the other side." The official said that Geelani seems to have realized that things are not going to be easy in future. "He (Geelani) recently thanked people for donating generously for his party. He (Geelani) is trying to create an impression that they are not getting any outside help that's why they are approaching people for donations," the official added. "If Modi led government continues with its hard posturing it would make life difficult for the separatists. Not many people among separatists are interested in joining hands with Geelani given his hardliner approach," said a source. He said moderate leaders are "desperate" to enter into parleys with Centre but new government making them "irrelevant" has put them in a tight spot. "During the past 10 years when Congress led UPA regime was in power, some people from the establishment used to talk to them through back channel. The Modi led government has snapped all these channels and there is no possibility of such talks being held in the future," the source added. Since the day separatist leaders met the Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit in New Delhi, they have remained tightlipped as they have nothing to say. "Unity proposal of Geelani won't have many takers as moderate leaders are already struggling with the issues confronting them. The biggest hurdle they are facing is shortage of funds," said a source. "Secondly the people who used to orchestrate the street protests and stone pelting are behind the bars. People too are not paying any heed towards their programs and slogans," he added. Recently the chairman of another faction of Hurriyat Conference, Shabir Ahmed Shah, who was expelled from the Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had announced that they are working in coordination with Geelani's faction. Both the factions had held a prayer meeting in Srinagar's old city, considered to be Mirwaiz's bastion, earlier this month to "show it to Mirwaiz that they are not afraid of entering into his area." |
