Sonawar no cake walk for Omar
8/29/2014 12:58:20 AM
Fazal Khan

Srinagar, Aug 28: If Chief Minister Omar Abdullah decides to contest from Sonawar constituency it won't be a cake walk for him as Congress is contemplating to give mandate to Peer Bilal son of a prominent religious leader from Harwan area.
Sources told Early Times that Peer Bilal's father is a renowned religious preacher and has thousands of followers in the Harwan belt, where people come out in large numbers to vote.
Besides this Bilal's father has been politically active in the area for a long time and has worked tirelessly for the-economic upliftment of the people living in city outskirts.
Having enjoyed close association in the Congress high command, he is also believed to be instrumental in ensuring the announcement and establishment of a major hospital in his area, development of religious places, widening, and construction of innumerable roads and bridges besides other developmental activities as well.
Going by the critical evaluation of the constituency it can be divided into three segments, Brane Nishat to Khimbar- Faqir Gujri (Harwan area), Gagribal to Sonwar and from Padrathen to Khonmoh. The last results have shown that Harwan area and Pandrathan to Khonmoh segments decide the winner of the seat as the area from the Gagribal to Sonawar goes with the boycott or the percentage of the votes polled is very thin.
This can add to the woes of Omar as he has to get the votes from the areas where people come to vote rather than those boycotting the polls.
On the other hand Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has already fielded a prominent businessman turned politician Muhammad Ashraf Mir from Sonawar. He made his presence felt in the last parliamentary elections by giving a much needed lead to the PDP candidate which resulted in a shocking first time defeat to the National Conference President and former Chief Minister of the State, Dr Farooq Abdullah.
The seat was previously won by Dr Farooq Abdullah and then in a bye-Election by Muhammad Yaseen Shah of National Conference by a margin of 54 and 212 votes respectively by defeating the candidates of People's Democratic Party G Q Pardesi and Mohammad Ashraf Mir.
