BARAMULLA, Aug 29: People of Sopore town and its adjoining areas are up in arms against the authorities for not giving proper attention to their worries which they are facing in the 21st century, the basic facilities are missing here since the arise of militancy in Sopore town of Baramulla district in north Kashmir. Local residents of Sopore put forth their problems in front of Early Times and expressed their anger regarding authorities, and said that we were ignored by politicians from time to time and let us know what our fault is. According to residents of New Light colony that, "the government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore is one of the most densely populated schools in the region, "There are around 1000 girls studying in the school that has an area of just 1.7 kanals. A senior official from Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore wished not to be named told Early Times that, "with sumos and hawkers sitting close to their classrooms, the school looks more of a fish market than a place of education during rush hours." We have been demanding the expansion of Girls HSS since 1994. "We gave suggestion to the higher authorities that they can vacate the District Institute of Education & Training building to make way for the school, but that suggestion fell on deaf ears, In fact they did the opposite - now there are two schools working from Government GHSS, official said. Local residents of town put forth their problems in front of early times that the Public Health Engineering Department supplies water from two main filtration plants of Watlab and Shrakwara to the town. Although the government claims that the water is more than sufficient
but the ground reality is something different. Mohammad Ashraf Rather of Sopore town says that the water supply network does not cover the entire Sopore Planning Area. The peripheral areas do not have access to the filter piped water supply.
The pipe network has also become obsolete as it has completed its design period. "The water supply is highly inadequate and people allege that the supplied water is directly supplied from the river.
One of the worst affected areas in Old Sopore includes Noorbagh, Shallapora and Model town Rather complained. Irshad Ahmad Dar residents of Sopore town believe that they are subjected to political victimization because of their political beliefs and we don't vote to any party that is why our town is in such a deplorable condition. "Whenever they visit the local MLA, he flatly refuses to help citing lack of votes cast in Sopore. The town being dubbed as the 'epicenter of militancy' has also done quite a harm Dar alleged.
