Kishtwar, Aug 29: Over three hundred employees of 850 MW Rattle Hydro Electrical Power project today held a strong protest against GVK/L&T managements for abandoning the project, beside making retrenchment of over six hundred employees engaged by both the companies. The agitating employees led by PDP Youth President Kishtwar Mohammad Omar Malik block the Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway for more then 3 hours and causes lot of inconvenience to the commuter. Later senior police official including ASP Kishtwar Abdul Qayoom along with officials of District administration led by ACR Kishtwar rush to the spot to pacify the agitating workers, but they refuse to budge forcing the police to take all the agitating workers into custody and shifted them to police post Drabshalah from where all were released after completing the legal formalities. While talking to "Early Times", Advocate Umar Malik (PDP Youth President Kishtwar) who led the agitating employees said that Rattle Power Project Workers Union has already submitted the memorandum along with charter of demands to both the companies through Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar. He said that the association demanded immediate start of project work without any delay. "Affected Families are the permanent employees of GVK---- it was GVK who send them on deputation with L&T and L&T cannot retrench them and can only send them back to GVK" said Umar Malik. He said that GVK must give written job assurance to them.
He said that L&T must give them in writing that they will never work again at Rattle power project and in case they again come back, L&T management will engage all the retrenched employees on priority bases, besides will pay them the salaries from the period since the work was closed. He said that both the companies should pay all the eligible dues to the retrenched employees including all project allowances, bonus, insurance, and six month advance salary to all the workers. He said that in case both the companies fail to address the issue, they will again come on road for seeking the justice.
It is pertinent to mention that GVK management is facing a financial crunch since last couple of years and is not in a position to carry forward the construction work till 2015 when the company starts getting revenue from some of its project presently under execution in other parts of the country. The sources said that GVK management is trying to buy the time by using its various planks to delay the construction work by citing one or other reason. However the sources within the government informed that in case GVK withdraws from the construction work, the state government will invite 2nd bidder TATA powers limited for signing an agreement of construction of the power project as the state government did not want to start tendering process a fresh as the same would delay the project construction as well as involve the cost escalation factor.
