Jammu, Aug 29: Drive to install electronic meters in holy town of Katra has been marred by allegations of discrimination from the locals as of the 50 houses, department chose only 6 to install the meters.
PDD is mum over the illegal use of electricity throughout the town although it started installing meters on selection basis. The installation of meters is going on in the areas where there is no such installation from past 18 years, but selectively. Same incident is reported in Kalka nagar area of katra which is nearest to the main grid station katra.
Score of locals rued that the department is installing electric meters in their area after a long wait which is a positive thing as it is required to generate the revenue, but besides this the department is doing nothing to pull off illegal connections. The locals also said that out of around 50 houses in the locality, the officials of PDD installed meters in only 6 houses. The sources also said that at the time of the same installation , the officials said that rest of the houses will get meter installation next day, but about a month passed and still there is no such further installation. The sources further said that even the main service line wire which is mandatory to be replaced alongwith the installation of meter is not being replaced and the officials installed meters on the old and worn out wires of the householders only. They also said that they have informed the AEE who has assured to look into the matter.
AEE PDD Katra when contacted by Early Times said "Using the main service line depends on availability and the consumer have to arrange if same is not available within the office". He again said that any wire available at the time of installation can be used and it is not necessary to use the black service line.
