Sajjad Lone not to join BJP | Post-poll alliance a possibility | | Fazal Khan SRINAGAR, Aug 29: Close proximity between People’s Conference led by Sajjad Gani Lone and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Kashmir has triggered wide spread speculations about something is cooking up between the two parties. Rumours were rife in Srinagar today that the PC chairman Sajjad Gani Lone may join the BJP and announcement in this regard would be made soon. However, PC insiders put the speculations to rest this evening saying, "We have our own identity and we cannot compromise on it." Sajjad's close aide while talking to Early Times said, "No doubt our chairman is in touch with the BJP leaders but that doesn't mean that he would join the BJP." He said that PC believes in talks as Kashmir is a "conflict zone" and whoever comes in power at the Centre is important for the politicians of Jammu and Kashmir. "The BJP general secretary and Rajya Sabha Member J P Nadda had called on Sajjad Lone last month and various issues were discussed," the aide said. He said, "People’s Conference has got a strong base in north Kashmir's Handwara area and there is every possibility of we winning good number of seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections." Pertinently, after the PC candidate Salamdin Bajad lost the recent Parliamentary elections from north Kashmir, party has been guarded in its approach and has not disclosed its election strategy as yet. The aide said that if we get enough seats and BJP is able to overthrow Congress in Jammu region then we can think of entering into an alliance with them to keep NC and Congress at bay. BJP is eyeing the Legislative Assembly (LA) polls in the State scheduled later this year and has set itself an ambitious target of bagging 44 of the 87 seats. The aide took a dig at PC opponents who are claiming that PC is "losing credibility" by having friendly relations with BJP. "NC despite having nearly 60 seats in 2000 joined hands with BJP to ensure that Omar is accommodated as a junior Minister in the Central government. They sharing power with BJP was not wrong we talking to them is wrong. How ridiculous!," the aide quipped. He said, "Our detractors should realize that there is BJP government in the Centre and it has to run the country for next five years. We cannot shut up for five years and sit at home." The aide made it clear that People’s Conference would not mind supporting BJP to keep NC and Congress at bay. "There is no possibility of a pre-poll alliance but post-poll alliance cannot be ruled out." |
