Omar succumbs, to chair Cabinet meet today | We're not B-team, nor a junior partner: Cong | | Fazal Khan SRINAGAR, Aug 29: After a high voltage drama and trading of charges against each other National Conference and Congress have decided to bury the hatchet and restore "cordial relations" yet again. Sources told Early Times that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who refrained from calling the Cabinet meet for more than one and a half month, has succumbed and is all set to chair a Cabinet meet here in the summer capital tomorrow. Omar, according to the sources, has also agreed to all the demands which were raised by the Congress during past one and a half month and all these issues would be discussed and endorsed by the Cabinet tomorrow. "Ice was broken two days ago when on the instructions of the Chief Minister senior NC leaders attended the meeting of the Coalition Coordination Committee and discussed various issues, including the probable candidates for the top posts which are vacant," said a source. He said that soon after the NC leaders skipped the CCC meet the State Congress leaders approached the party high command with a suggestion that Congress should withdraw support from NC-led government in JK. However, the high command turned down the proposal and assured the state Congress leaders that matter would be taken up with the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and he would be told to "behave." After the Congress high command turned down the proposal of the state Congress leaders the JKPCC Chief Prof Saifuddin Soz offered an olive branch to National Conference saying, "I am not interested in pulling down the government but democratic and constitutional institutions should function normally." Sources said that soon after the Chief Minister returned from London earlier this month, "He (Omar) received a call from New Delhi and he was told clearly to ask his ministers to attend the CCC meet and he asked to convene the Cabinet meeting as soon as possible," said a source. The Omar, according to the source, "was conveyed if he fails to fall in the line the future of the present dispensation is bleak and it would also end the possibility of Congress and NC joining hands in the near future." Pertinently, during the past one and a half month Chief Minister has made many important announcements on his own without taking the Congress Ministers and leaders into confidence. Omar's announcement on the occasion of Independence Day about granting reservation to OBCs and Paharis had irked the Congress leaders. They had claimed that these issues were raised by the Congress Ministers in the Cabinet meetings held in the past. "Omar is trying to take credit alone. We won't let it happen," the Congress leaders had said. Sources said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has "given up" and has conceded to all the demands which were made by the Congress during the past one and a half month. "The announcements which were made by the Chief Minister in the recent past will be endorsed in tomorrow's Cabinet meeting. The names suggested by the Congress party for the top posts which have been lying vacant would be also finalized by the Cabinet," they said. Sources said that major reshuffle in the administration and police which was put on hold after the war of words between the NC and Congress broke out would also be finalized by the Cabinet tomorrow. A senior Congress leader while talking to Early Times said, "We have always maintained that we are not a B-team in coalition, neither are we the junior partners. Omar had to soften his stand and succumb." |
