Cong leadership under pressure to reject panels constituted by Election Committee | Selection of Candidates | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 30: Notwithstanding the panels constituted by the Election Committee in its meeting last week at Srinagar, Congress leaders have started hectic lobbying to ensure mandates for their loyalists in the coming Assembly elections. Congress leaders have reportedly assured their loyalists that panels are not the final decisions and assured their supporters that many leaders whose names are included in the panels are likely to lose the mandates. Credible sources in the Congress said that some senior Congress leaders are not happy over the way panels were constituted because names of their loyalists were missing. Furthermore panels were constituted in the presence of some leaders who were themselves candidates. Interestingly some of the members of the Election Committee were themselves claimants of mandates so it was really ridiculous to discuss their names in their presence. As per rules, those who are claimants of the mandates should be asked to go out when their names of potential candidates were discussed on the particular constituency where they are staking claims. But this has not happened in the Election Committee meeting of the Congress party. Members have themselves highlighted their qualities in the meeting. Credible sources said that senior Congress leaders are mounting pressure on the central leadership not to take panels seriously and again hold discussions with only a group of leaders to finalize candidates. Names of some "deserving" candidates were ignored because those present in the meeting tried to include their own names in the panels. Credible sources said that some workers are pressurizing the leadership not to repeat all the sitting MLAs and give chances of fresh faces because people are fed up with the old faces. |
