Govt ignores Early Times, rewards others
Award Ceremony PR Exercise Ahead of Polls!
8/30/2014 11:57:24 PM

Sandeep Bhat
Srinagar, Aug 30: The Government today awarded 36 news organizations in summer capital here it claimed that the media persons and dailies were awarded for their "performance." Irony is that many big, small, known and unknown newspapers were awarded without disclosing the merit for which they were honoured.
Early Times, which has widespread readership all over Jammu and Kashmir didn't figure in the list of the newspapers, which government acknowledged.
Government leaving Early Times out has proved a point that healthy criticism is intolerable. Why others were rewarded is a million dollar question as there was no mention of the work these organizations have done. Nor did the government specify any instance of their "meritorious performance." Awarding media organizations seemed to be more of a PR exercise aimed at appeasing media ahead of elections.
Government not awarding us is inconsequential for us, as Early Times has never acted as stooge of any government since its inception in 2002. People reposing faith on us is the biggest award we have got during all these years. We have stood by the people and would always stand for them come what may.
Early Times has always highlighted the miseries of the masses and its people's platform. This newspaper has never succumbed under pressure neither has it acted as a mouthpiece of the government at any point of time.
Early Times is bound to fulfill its duty .The ethics of journalism demand that we have to side with people and the truth. If media plays into the hands of government it becomes a "propaganda tool" and we are proud to be people's voice rather than being the official spokesman.
People approach media with lots of expectations as media acts as bridge between the government and the people. We at Early Times have never disappointed the masses. It's our biggest achievement, and biggest reward.
Early Times since its inception has raised the important issues as we believe in bold and fair journalism. Early Times has never succumbed to any pressure from outside. We believe in reflecting the realities as media is the mirror of the society.
We have faced threats in the past, our publication was also stopped, staffers were harassed but the mission of upholding truth continues and would continue in future also.
We also appreciate the good work done by some legislators, ministers and also officials, but our main work is to act as a watchdog and point out the shortcomings of the government and the administration.
We at Early Times don't believe in getting awards and appreciation from the government. We believe in free, fair and bold journalism, and our motto is to ensure that truth prevails.
