Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 31: An extension lecture on Functional English and Pedagogy was organized by the Department of English GCW Parade in collaboration with the centre for new literatures, culture and communication studies, University of Jammu in the College Auditorium. The Resource person was Prof. Chanchala Naik, Dean International Studies, EFLU (English Foreign Language, University of Hyderabad). The programme started with the Welcome Address given by Dr. Sonia Khajuria, Associate Prof. in English, GCW Parade Jammu. Prof. Kailash Baral, Department of English, University of Guwahati, Prof. Hemla Aggarwal, Principal, GCW Parade, Prof. Posh Charak, Dean Research Studies and Centre for New Literatures, Culture and Communication Studies, University of Jammu Prof. Sucheta Pathania, Dr. Sadaf Shah, Dr. Garima Gupta, Faculy from Department of English, University of Jammu. Mr. Stanzin, Asstt. Prof, Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu, staff Members and students of GCW Parade were present on the occasion Prof Naik enlightened the students about Functional English as a subject that develops effective communications skills in day to day life. Its characteristics are opposite to that of structural English which focuses on formal part is grammer. She said that Functional English is very important in the today's scenario as it enables an individual to understand the latest technology understand and communicate with the people at global level and reforms the personality of the individual to a larger extent. She further discussed that in school emphasis was given on the formal part (Form) of language i.e The grammar part, but leaves the application of it at communicative level. She further elaborated that it is not important how much you know but how capable you are in the communicating. She said that the Pedagogy means the art and science of teaching language, techniques of teaching so that learning becomes easy. HRDA, few month back suggested that there should be collaborative teaching in the class by arranging activities in the class which will change the task of a teacher from a Lecturer to a facilitator so that learning becomes effective. After this the house was thrown open for discussion. In the end, vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Garima Gupta. |
