Elections draw close, but confusion refuses to die down in National Conference, Congress
Alliance partners lag behind in distribution of mandates

SRINAGAR, Aug 31: National Conference and Congress-partners in the present coalition dispensation seem to be confused as far as distribution of mandates for the upcoming assembly elections in the state is concerned. This is despite the fact that elections are few months away.
National Conference, once the leading mainstream regional party of state is yet to decide about the mandate for the 40 assembly seats. The party has so far issued three lists of candidates but at the same time it is confused in publishing the fourth list. This has given an impression that final decision in this regard is yet to be taken.
The party was supposed to issue the fourth list on last Sunday (August 24) but same could not happen. Some of the party insiders said that the list was delayed since the working President of the party, Omar Abdullah was away in London in connection with treatment of his father and party President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
"Now it is more than a week that Omar has returned from London but still then the list is not out. It means that all is not well with the party leadership and consensus has eluded it over the distribution of mandates. As the time is ticking by people are becoming apprehensive over the distribution of mandates for the upcoming assembly elections," said sources.
Sources said that assembly segments like Zadibal, Sonwar, Ganderbal and Hazratbal are giving sleepless nights to the party leadership. They said the leadership is confused over the distribution of mandates for these assembly seats. The party leaders believe that it would be difficult to pull through from these seats and as such want to give mandate to the best possible alternative available.
Although, the National Conference has so far issued three lists of candidates its alliance partner Congress is lagging far behind. The party has not issued any list so far and such the election preparations of the party are yet to begin. The party leaders had some time back said that the mandates have been finalized and mere announcement is pending.
"The Congress leadership in New Delhi is yet to come out of shock and the fallout is felt in Jammu & Kashmir. The party in-charge for Jammu & Kashmir, Ambika Soni had in July said that the party would announce the candidates soon but nothing of that sort happened. There has been an inordinate delay in the distribution of mandates," said sources.
Sources said the party leaders are quite worried over the outcome of elections as they are facing tremendous challenge from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively. The party leaders apprehend that they might be wiped out from the state this time around.
"The Congress party has made a blunder by not naming its chief ministerial candidate for the assembly elections. At times the charisma of CM candidate attracts voters and thus it benefits the party in long run. This is yet to be understood by Congress and the party may face serious consequences due to this reason," said sources.
