Babu's self proclamation as Cong contender incites party leaders
9/2/2014 12:01:57 AM
Kunal Shrivatsa
Jammu, Sept 1: Even as Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has yet to finalize candidate for Kathua constituency for the forthcoming assembly elections, the party leaders vying to be a contender for the seat have started to wash dirty linen in public thereby bringing embarrassment to the party.
The infighting in Kathua unit of Congress came in open today when a senior party leader Pankaj Dogra unleashed a war of words against his own party colleague and one of the probable Congress candidates from Kathua, former Minister Babu Singh, who yesterday announced unilaterally in public that he will be the official nominee of the party from the seat.
Addressing media persons at Kathua today, Pankaj Dogra minced no words in criticizing Babu Singh for his claims that Congress has finalized his name for the candidature from Kathua seat.
Slamming Babu Singh, senior Congress leader Pankaj Dogra accompanied by another party leader Ajeet Bawa said, "how can a person known for his double speak and double standards can claim that Congress has chosen him for contesting Assembly poll from Kathua".
Meanwhile, when Early Times contacted Pankaj Dogra on phone, he reiterated what he had told reporters earlier in the day at Kathua.
Dogra said that Babu Singh has tried to belittle the democratic set up of a political organization like Congress by announcing his name as a Congress candidate on his own.
"By declaring his name without getting an official nod from the Congress high command, Babu Singh has posed a challenge to the authority of the highest body in the party…. It is certainly not Congress party's culture that anybody pronounces to be a self style candidate for contesting any election… It amounts to indiscipline within party," said Dogra.
Dogra even ridiculed Babu Singh for claiming that Congress desperately needs him as the party has dearth of leaders having tall stature and mass appeal among the people of Kathua constituency in particular and the entire district in general.
"Babu Singh thinks himself over and above the party….. His assertions that Congress needs him rather than the other way round has brought bad repute to the party… The party should take notice of this," said Dogra.
It is pertinent to mention here that Babu Singh while addressing a workers meeting of Nature-Mankind Friendly Global Party, founded by him, had said that he has accepted an offer of Congress to contest election from Kathua.
While addressing his supporters in the meeting in presence of media, Babu Singh said that Congress high command including senior most Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Ambika Soni, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-u-Din Soz have offered him a Congress ticket from Kathua constituency.
The infighting in Kathua Congress has fetched more trouble for the party which is still licking its wounds inflicted by a crushing defeat it received in Parliamentary polls viz- a -viz recovering from the setback it got from its two time ex-Member of Parliament Lal Singh, who quit the Congress to join BJP.
