SRINAGAR, Sept 2 : The government of Jammu and Kashmir is ill prepared to handle the situation that arise out of the fire incidents, which continue to take place, consuming property worth crores. One fails to understand as to what the government wants to convey when it claims tall that it is prepared to come alive during the disasters. It is pertinent to mention here that the fire and emergency services hasn’t been able to deliver its services to the satisfaction of the people across the state, particularly in the valley as it has not installed efficient fire extinguishing means. In fact most of the vital establishments are devoid of fire extinguishing facilities. It appears that the government hasn’t learnt a lesson from the incidents of fire particularly from the one which completely destroyed the revered shrine of Dastgeer Saheb at Khanyar only some time before. Shaken by that fire incident, the government had expressed a will to install fire extinguishing instruments but till date it has failed to fulfill its commitment. “The fire at the shrine of the Dastgeer Saheb provided the politicianswith an opportunity to derive their personal means. They made hue and cry over this fire incident only to politicize it. It is not about the shrines only, it is a serious matter related to the life and property of the lakhs of people who are always apprehensive given the poor concern of the authorities,” said Mohammad Sidique, whose opinion was sought by the Early Times. Sidique went on saying that the shrine of Dastgeer Saheb has been reconstructed but it is worth mentioning that the fire extinguishing equipment has not been installed there much to the surprise of the people. Sidique said that it is no harm to make promises as making promises are the tactics of the people in power. There are many vital installations in the form of hospitals, schools and other government buildings which ask for immediate attention of the authorities so as to come with the solutions to the fire incidents. Though the government made promises that the latest means of the fire extinguishing instruments be installed in the interest of the people but even after the years have passed nothing of this kind has been done. An official from the fire and emergency services wishing anonymity said that there is no fire extinguishing facilities available in the vital government buildings, shrines and at historical places. He said that fire and emergency services made repeated pleas to the government for the procurement of the equipments but till date the government hasn’t heeded to our proposal.
