Army connects Rajouri with Reasi at Kotranka
9/16/2014 10:30:16 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 16 : Under Operation Megh-Rahat in one of the major initiatives taken by the Indian Army in one of its first steps of rehabilitation and resurrection of Jammu & Kashmir state infrastructure the call for launch of the biggest Bailey bridge was taken to connect the districts of Rajouri and Reasi. The existing bridge of 1992 vintage which had got washed away due to the onslaught of the voluminous water carnage at Kotranka Tehsil had destroyed the only road communication of approx 75000 people residing in 51 villages of the region. Indirectly the calamity had affected 1.3 lakh population distributed in both the districts. In the absence of a plan for rehabilitation from the district and state government the Army planned to open the lines of communication as first unopposed requirement of the state. Immediately the Engineer Regiment swung into action who ascertained the space gap of 180 feet for bridging at site. During the past four days Engineer Taskforce deployed at location cleared the abutment and prepared the bridge area for clear launch of the bridge while separate taskforces were earmarked to consolidate bridging stores from all corners of the state. This included transportation of stores from Akhnoor and Udhampur. Some critical stores were also retrieved from redundant bridges of old National highway at Panjgrain near Nagrota. In the ensuring operations two Jawans of the unit lost portions of their finger but yet the Tambis pooled in all parts of the bridge with relentless zest to achieve this objective. While the task is in progress it is expected shortly that the Bailey bridge will roll and tip on the banks significantly declaring the road connections open and thus heralding a new era of hope despite the loss of it in the floods of recent past.
