Amenities hit rock bottom as SMVDU affects major fee hike | University officially closed for one day as power, water supplies fail | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, Sept 16: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) had to be closed down for a day following complete breakdown in essential supplies including water, electricity and medicines. The University administration closed the University for one day (Tuesday last) due to paucity of the drinking water. The university took step when some students and faculty members fell un conscious of thirst as the university run completely out of its water reserves. Interestingly, the University has been rendered bereft of even basic amenities after administration affected a 30 percent hike in the existing fee structure and even after paying 1.70 lakh per year, students are forced to live in sub human conditions. The University campus has run dry as for the last more than 20 days there is no water supply to the campus due to affected power supply and flooding in Jajjar Kotli. Despite the crisis, SMVDU authorities did not bother to engage water tankers for 1700 souls ( 1500 students and 200 faculty members) residing in the University campus. The water is supplied to the university from the rivulet in Jajjar Kotli and any interruption in power supply results snap in the supply of water to University campus. Speaking to ET, the parents of the students said that earlier, when Roop Avtar Kour was registrar, studnets did not face such experience. If the sources are to be believed, machanical wing of the SMVDU has eight engineers headed by Kamal Sharma and Deputy University Engineer Ashok Sharma. The other six are junior engineers including two from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board(SMVDSB) on deputation in SMVDU. It is alleged that all the engineers are hardly seen after 5 pm in campus. The condition of the power wing is no different as the AEE who hails from Udhampur does not stay in the campus and the JE who stayed in the campus till recently has shifted to Jagti camp, leaving the power infrastructure totally unattended after evening hours. The condition of the medical wing is also no different, as despite of 5 member staff, the wing is run by two nurses and one medical assistant. The doctors namely Pallav Sharma and his assistant namely Isha Sharma, on deputation from SMVDSB, are hardly visible. The transport wing also need to be reigned to ferry the traunts, parents alleged, demanding personal intervention of VC over the issue. Meanwhile, repeated contact to Registrar SMVDU Ajay Khajuria for comment went in vain. |
