Garbage, dead animals float in Srinagar
Kashmir Floods
9/16/2014 11:35:53 PM
Fear of epidemic breaking out looms large
Fazal Khan
SRINAGAR, Sept 16: As the flood waters are receding across Kashmir, fear of epidemic breaking out is looming large. Heaps of garbage are lying unattended in the lanes and bye lanes of many city areas as Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is missing from the scene.
With each passing day problems of people are getting aggravated as stink and dust around city is making life miserable for the flood hit people. In many places situation has taken an ugly turn. People fear if garbage and dead animals are not disposed off forthwith it can lead to epidemic breaking out in many areas.
People have lost hope that government would come for their rescue. In many areas people have set ablaze the garbage to do away with stink. "Government is missing. No one is coming forward to take us out from the mess we are in," said Fayaz Ahmed of Sanat Nagar.
Another problem which people are facing is that dead animals are floating in Qamerwari, Bemina, Tengpora and other adjoining areas. The stink emanating from the carcass of these animals is unbearable. "The stagnant water is getting contaminated with each passing day. If something is not done immediately all of us will die," said Ghulam Ahmed of Chatabal area.
He claimed that hundreds of dead animals are floating in water at Army's dairy farm near Chatabal. "We hope Army will activate its men and machinery to get the carcasses of these dead animals cleared," Ahmed added.
People are up in arms against the government. "The crippled state government and SMC have failed to come for our rescue. We can understand that employees too are facing problems. Government needs to come up with a contingency plan to diffuse the crisis," locals said.
They said outsourcing a few odd jobs is not a bad option. "We need outside help at this hour of crisis. Situation has taken an ugly turn. Lackadaisical attitude of the authorities can add to our woes," said Dr Faheem.
Many young people have set up medical camps across the city to help the flood victims. "We are trying our best to create awareness among the masses and are advising them to take precautions to save themselves from infection and waterborne diseases," Dr Faheem added.
In many areas carnivore birds are feeding themselves on dead dogs and cows.
"If you move into the interiors of Rajbagh, you will find scores of dead dogs floating around. They have become a source of disease," said Irfan Ahmed member of a volunteer group from Ikhrajpora, carrying rescue and relief operations in the inundated Raj Bagh and Jawahar Nagar areas.
The situation is grim in Lasjan on the Srinagar outskirts which remained completely submerged for many days as the area is located on the Jhelum river embankment.
A volunteer, who is helping flood victims, told Early Times that government is not putting in any serious effort to get rid of the dead animals. "In fact there is no government anywhere. It's unfortunate that state government has not learnt from its mistakes," he said, "We are trying to help marooned people. If water remains stagnant and dead animals are not removed, then after floods there is every possibility of epidemic breaking out in the flood hit areas," the volunteer added.
