Peoples' mood not in favour of holding Assembly poll during current year
9/17/2014 11:29:16 PM
Jammu, Sept 17 : Unprecedented floods that have caused death and devastation on a massive scale in Jammu and Kahsmir have eclipsed the pre-poll scenario in the state.
Days before the floods that ravaged Various parts of the state people and political leaders were seen engaged in discussion on various election related issues. Majority of people were seen discussing the fate of the candidates who had been fielded by a number of political parties.
They were seen busy in discussing the prospects of each party in the ensuing election. They were seen debating the likely impact of the call for poll boycott given by the separatists. But the floods have changed the situation.
Neither the political leaders not people in the state discuss the Assembly election. They simply keep their eyes fixed on their survival. They are seen shedding tears over the loss of lives in the Floods and over the massive damage to their residential houses, crops and orchards. They are seen lamenting over heavy loss to the state's basic infrastructure.
Prior to the floods majority of people was for preponing the Assembly election so that the poll throw up a responsible Government or a responsible coalition rule. After the floods people favour postponement of the election on the ground that neither the existing situation is conducive for the election nor it was going to be so in the next six months.
Majority of people favour holding of the election somewhere next year after the basic infrastructure, damaged by the floods, was rebuilt. They do not mind if the election was held under the Governor's rule. Many flood hit people say "we are mourning over our losses and We are in no mood to participate in the election process." They say that if the Government decided to hold the election even within next four months it would result in poor polling percentage allowing separatists to claim that people have responded to their call for poll boycott.
