Bypoll results across 10 states a wake-up call for BJP; in J&K too, party unlikely to achieve 44+ target | Amit Shah fails to cash in on Modi's popularity | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Sept 17: Despite the historic performance of BJP in the 2014 general elections, the dismal show put up by it in its first electoral test since its landslide win in May, is a cause of worry for its "think tanks". The results of bypolls held across 10 states can effectively be called a wake-up call for the party. Having put up such a poor show in the bypolls, the party was also unlikely to achieve the target of 44+ seats to form its own government in J&K. The bypoll results have come up as a setback for BJP at the national level and are being seen as a test of prime minister Narendra Modi's popularity. These are also a cause of worry for BJP president Amit Shah as the party has lost ground to its opponents in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Shah was made BJP president after Modi became prime minister. A close confidant of Modi, he, however, could not cash in on his popularity. His campaigning for the party in the bypolls has been bereft of any charisma. During his recent visit to the flood-affected R S Pura here, he had left the sufferers unsatisfied by avoiding meetings with them. Like Modi, people had attached high hopes with him too but he had left for New Delhi without giving time to the people who wanted to speak to him personally and bring their grievances to his notice. In the bypolls held under his presidentship, the party lost eight of the 11 seats in the key state of Uttar Pradesh and three of the four seats in Rajasthan. His "charisma" in these states failed to bring any good results for the party which could not even retain the seats earlier held by it. With Shah running the party affairs and going by the bypoll results, the 44+ mission set by the party in J&K, where it hopes to form its own government, seems to be a distant dream now. When Shah's hectic campaigning yielded no results across the 10 states, his charisma was unlikely to show any results in J&K too. Polling was held last week for three parliamentary and 33 state assembly seats in 10 states. Twenty four of the 33 assembly seats were so far held by BJP. The BJP has won the Vadodara parliamentary seat vacated by Modi after he won two seats in May's general elections. In Uttar Pradesh, ruling Samajwadi Party won eight of the 11 seats and the Congress party won three of the four seats in Rajasthan. In the general elections, BJP had swept the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh by winning 71 of the 80 seats and won all the 25 seats in Rajasthan. It actually suffered a jolt in Rajasthan where it won only one seat. In Gujarat, ruling BJP could retain only six of the nine seats. The BJP, which is now gearing up for crucial assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra next month, needs to do an introspection. It also needs to find out whether it should depend on Amit Shah for campaigning or again bank on Modi for a "charisma". The bypolls for 33 seats spread over 10 states were held on September 13. |
