Kashmir limps to normalcy; All important airport roads still inoperative | Several, foreigners, tourists still struck | | Asif Iqbal Naik Jammu, Sept 18: Two weeks since the worst flood furry hit Jammu and Kashmir , particularly Kashmir valley, causing wide spread death and destruction, the government agencies are yet to restore internal road links including the important airport road that connects Srinagar city with the airport. The Srinagar airport road is still water logged at many places causing lot of inconvenience to the people, particularly the foreigners and non locals who are still trapped in the valley due to floods and desperate to reach Srinagar airport. Srinagar Airport is a witness to scenes of desperation, helplessness and gratefulness. A group of 21 Bihar based labourers who after facing lot of problem reached the airport informed the "Early Times" that they were trapped on the outskirts of Srinagar city on very first day and added that no one turned up for their help. They said that after traveling for several hours through various waterlogged areas, they managed to reach Srinagar airport for boarding the flight. A group of foreigners, including a fragile old man who had a narrow escape appeared at the airport, escorted by the IGP Hemant Lohia, who turned savior for this group that included an old man in wheel chair. The group was expressing deep gratitude and gratefulness to their saviours because of whom they were alive and returning to their homes. A non local newly wedded couple was also sitting adjacent to the Bihari labourers; the bride with fresh Chura (Bangles) on was screaming and her ordeal could easily be judged from her pale and fainted face. Meanwhile, despite all out efforts by several agencies, It is not only airport road which is still full of water at many places, another important road connecting Dal Gate area with Chashmashahi, Mughal Gardens, Dachigham and other important destinations including Governor House is also full of water causing lot of inconvenience to the people. Another important SOURA Hospital road was also full of water causing lot of problems to the people in shifting the patients to this important hospital. Dal Gate-Maqdoom Shah road which provides connectivity to vast area of Kashmir is also yet to be restored for vehicular movement due to water logging at many places. Several people in Kashmir while talking to "Early Times", blamed the government for its inefficiency in tackling the situation as a result of which even after two weeks since the flesh flood hits valley, many important roads, markets and government offices including civil secretariat are still waterlogged. |
