Jammu, Sept 18 :  Despite the government claims that it was committed to the promotion of sports activities in the state, those responsible for nurturing the budding talent here are meted out discrimination as they get very low salaries as compared to the coaches engaged by the sports councils of other state in the country.
Sources revealed that the coaches engaged to train the young players here are getting very low salaries as compared to the coaches of other states. The coaches here are also denied other facilities, the sources alleged.
Sources also rued that while the coaches in any other state of the country also get pensions after retirement, the coaches of Jammu and Kashmir Sports council are working on a non- pensionable service even after having the same qualification.
Sources said that any coach with diploma from National Institute of Sports(NIS) Patiala, Bangalore and Mumbai qualifies as a coach in all the SAARC countries as many of the coaches from these countries get training in Bangalore and Patiala but the coaches of Jammu even after having NIS diploma are getting lesser salaries.
Sources said the junior coaches of other states are getting more salaries than the senior coaches of Jammu. The newly recruited contractual coaches in the State Sports Council get less wages then the casual drivers engaged recently. A coach with a Post Graduate diploma in Sports from country's reputed National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala that too with proficiency in the discipline has been engaged on a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 5,000 whereas a driver appointed on same lines gets Rs 7,000 per month”, said the sources.
Meanwhile, sources alleged that the coaches in Jammu Sports council were degraded thrice by the council which resulted in the lowering their grades.
Sports officer Rajan Sharma when contacted by Early Times refused to speak on the issue.
Sidharth Sharma, Joint Secreatary sports council when contacted by Early Times said there was no incident of degrading any body. Salaries are awarded on the basis of grades and the permanent coaches are getting more salaries than the contractual ones, he informed.
