Flash-floods expose Govt's disaster preparedness
Hospital space cramped for huge influx of patients

Jammu, Sept 18: Recent flood fury in Jammu and Kashmir has exposed state government's preparedness to deal with calamity of this magnitude. Huge influx of patients to hospitals has left them cramped and services rendered by them pathetically inadequate.
Sources in Health and Medical Education department informed that to cater to patients from Valley, who are being air lifted here due to total collapse of healthcare facilities there, temporary arrangements are being made to accommodate them.
Large number of patients from valley are being air lifted to Jammu, but increasing number of patients is cramping GMCH Jammu and the administration is mulling setting-up make shift hospital at Red Cross Society's attendant Sarai at Maheshpura Jammu", sources informed, adding that the matter has been taken-up with Divisional Commissioner Jammu.
"With receding water level in sub-merged Srinagar city, the number of patients from Valley is likely to increase. About 25-30 bedded make-shift hospital will be set in coming days", sources informed.
Sources at GMC told that two days back four patients from Valley were shifted here, and all were suffering Kidney ailments and were admitted in dialysis unit. "Around 12 patients can available dialysis facility at one time, but if the number increases it will also create panic. As every day patients are being air lifted here for treatment", said a senior at GMC wishing not to be named.
When contacted, Principal, GMCH Dr Ghynsham Dev Gupta informed that steps are being taken to provide better health services for the patients coming from Valley. "Alternative arrangements are being made to provide healthcare services to them, not only patients from Valley, but patients from Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur and other parts of flood affected areas are arriving here with each-passing day", he said, adding that the hospital administration is ready to meet the eventuality.
