Baramulla, Sept 19: Though the clear sky has offered some respite to valleyites yet many of localities like Shair Colony of Sopore town in district Baramulla, continue to remain inundated, whereas flood waters increasing in north Kashmir earlier this week have receded few feet's below the danger mark. Many of valleyites apprehended about 'winters' which they term it would be bad to worst.
Local residents of many villages in Sopore town have taken a temporary shelter in government buildings, like schools, hospitals and
horticulture and other nearby places too. Residents of Mahrajpora and other adjoining areas say that at least more than fifty structures have suffered damages in the Shair Colony alone.
Naseer Ahmad a local resident of Shair coloney lamented police and local youth have rescued many people from these areas, but we are very much worried that winter is about to come after few months which will be a big challenge for we people.
"It was a natural calamity and we are faced it due to our deeds be it deforestation, unplanned urbanization or be it the encroachment of
land close at river basins the same time we are worried of diseases which can occur aftermath of floods, he added. Another local said that in post flood scenario the people of valley now are worried about water borne diseases and destroying carcasses of dead animals that have become more panicky for the people in distress.
Shabir Ahmad Dar of Shair colony, Sopore spoke to Early Times over the phone and said, "Most of clean water supplies have now turned
contaminated because of flooding of last week.
"Hepatitis A and E are already common in various localities because of the lack of safe drinking water and now the threat has further aggravated in post flood situation, another local lamented.
Locals are very much worried of communicable diseases which might increase due to many pathogens and bacteria that are being transported by the water. They feared that there could be a many water borne diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, E and diarrhea to mention a few that could be more disastrous.
Talking to Early Times, Dr Asif Ahmad an eminent consultant physician from Sopore said that need of the hour is to boil the water very much and wear masks wherever necessary.
"There are certain diseases that are directly correlated with floods they include any dermatitis and any wound, nose throat or eye infection, Dr Ahmed said and added, "Gastrointestinal disease and diarrheal diseases are very common due to a lack of clean water."He further said that it is media's active support that we hope that it would create awareness among people about using safe drinking water by boiling it and by using water-purification tablets.
