ERA first to respond to CM's call | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 19: It is to be noted that while almost the entire state machinery is missing after the floods hit Srinagar, the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) was among the first departments to respond to the emergency situation. On September 15, when two ONGC high-power pumps were flown to Srinagar, there was no official of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to receive them. It was the ERA officials who responded to the distress call of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The department officials and field workers not only installed the equipment in Rajbagh and other areas, but also monitored the de-watering operation. The situation in the city was so bad at that time that the ERA team was also stone-pelted by the residents of the area. The machines were being installed at night, and the residents thought that these were some miscreants who had come to loot the houses. A senior official's hand was also injured in the attack. Despite the setback, the ERA team started operating the de-watering machines from 6 am the next day. |
