Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 19: Well the Chinese President, XI Jinping has many sweet things to tell about India. And if the feelings he has expressed in a writeup, before leaving for New Delhi, are any guide one could say that if India has to bank on any world leader it should be XI Jinping.
In this write-up there is no trace of malice against India. No signs of bias against India. It simply makes the reader believe that China trusts India more than any other country. And he has given vent to his feelings, in the write-up,after a period of 17 years. He himself says that he had visited India 17 years ago.
What does XI Jinping says. "Now 17 years later, I am about to once again visit India, an enchanting and beautiful land that has captured world attention. India is an emerging economy and a big developing country. It is Asia's third largest economy and the world's second largest exporter of software and agriculture products. A member of the United Nations, the G20, the BRICS and other organisations, India is playing an increasingly important role in the regional and international arena. The "Story of India" has spread far and wide. With the new government coming into office, a new wave of reform and development has been sweeping across India, greatly boosting the confidence of the Indian people and attracting keen international interest in its opportunities."
He believes that relations between China and India have made significant progress in the new century." The strategic and cooperative partnership for peace and prosperity has been established. China has become India's largest trading partner, with their bilateral trade volume increasing from less than US$3 billion early this century to nearly US$70 billion. Mutual visits reached 8,20,000 last year. We have had close coordination and cooperation on climate change, food security, energy security and other global issues and upheld the common interests of our two countries as well as the developing world as a whole. Progress has been made in the negotiations on the boundary question and the two sides have worked together to maintain peace and tranquility in the border area. China-India relations have become one of the most dynamic and promising bilateral relations in the 21st century."
And during the current visit to India the two sides have signed number of agreements and pacts that could promote bilateral trade and help India to modernize the railways and energy sector. So far so good.Yes, India, that too under the Government led by Narendra Modi, is keen to promote cordial ties with all nations in the world, especially with its close neighbours.
And during the last over 100 days Modi has been in search of developing ties with those countries with which India has had good relations and mending fences with those that have been trying to needle India on many fronts. And on top of the agenda has been China and Pakistan.
Well both China and Pakistan have not hesitated reciprocating Modi's goodwill gestures by pinching Indian troops on the LOC,IB and the LAC.Yes,India is keen to promote trade, people to people contact with China.India is eager to promote joint cooperation in the sectors of energy, industry and nuclear energy. But above all India is keen to have peace on the LAC as much as it wants harmony on the LOC and the IB. Even after the well meaning Modi was installed as Prime Minister,India has had to face many a challenges from the Chinese soldiers and the Pakistani troops. While the Chinese troops and civilians have been found intruding into the Indian territory in Ladakh without firing a shot,Pakistani troops have been trying to help militants to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir by opening fire on the Indian border outposts and pickets on the LOC and on the IB.
India wants settlement of the bilateral problems through the process of dialogue. While Islamabad has been found sabotaging the process of talks by resorting to ceasefire violations and by providing moral and material support to militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir,Beijing has been trying to rake up the border issue by resorting to sporadic incursions.
Hence in the interest of peace both Beijing and Islamabad should respond favourably to New Delhi's offer for peaceful settlement of the bilateral issues. And in the context of changing political equations it would be better for Beijing and Islamabad to stop believing that India is surviving in isolation and its emphasis on talks is an indication of its weakness. While Beijing needs to realize that India is not what it was in 1962, Islamabad should understand how it faced defeat in the four wars Pakistan fought against India.
