JAMMU, Sept 19: On Wednesday, Om Parkash Sharma and Swarna Sharma returned Jammu safely from flood ravaged valley but they are still registered as missing in the official records of state government, exposing lack of coordination amongst different agencies.
The Jammu and Kashmir state government has set up a helpline center with its office at Divisional Commissioner Office Jammu under the name, "J&K Connect Center 24x7, Dedicated Helpline to Trace the Missing Persons in Recent Floods", and in the last five days a total of 282 persons have registered their calls but if the date of missing persons will be verified there might be lot of discrepancies in the record and reality.
According to the data compiled by JK Connect Center, a total of 347 people are registered as missing, out of whom 341 are registered missing from Kashmir valley while 6 from Jammu province but when this correspondent called to some of the relatives of alleged missing persons, it came to fore that many of them had reached their homes safely.
In the record of JK Connect Center, sister of Abdul Latif, a resident of Sidhra and three daughters of his sister were shown as missing, but when this correspondent called Abdul Latif, he said that the family was not missing but were marooned in Bemina area. He further said that he had sought help from JK Connect Center as the family was in urgent need of medicine.
"Still the family is trapped in their house but the local volunteers are helping them. They are not missing but had need urgent help but now we are in regular touch with them after the communication has restored", he said.
Asked why he had not informed the JK Connect Center about the whereabouts of his relatives, he said that he had asked for some help and had not asked them that the family was missing.
The officials available at JK Connect Center informed that after getting the calls, they informed the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police about the persons.
Moreover, Om Parkash Sharma and Swarna Sharma of Jammu were also registered as missing from Srinagar but when this correspondent called the relatives, they informed that they had sent air-tickets to them and they had returned safely two days back.
"Though the government had taken a good initiative and had opened the JK Connect Center but there was lack of professionalism and the officials on duty had not bothered to recheck from the relatives, whether their relatives have reached home or not", an official said, adding that in the last five days a total of 282 calls were registered and on Friday only 32 calls were registered.
