Floods hit political activities, LA polls likely to be postponed
Governor's rule in JK on cards

Srinagar, Sept 19: Floods devastating Kashmir has hit the election season as political activities have come to a grinding halt. There are rumours that elections may be postponed in JK and Governor's rule is in offing.
Just before floods inundated Kashmir, political activities were in full swing. Soon after Kashmir got submerged politicians disappeared fled from the Valley. Most of them, according to the media reports, had taken refuge in New Delhi and other states. The state's top brass, according to the sources, were "enjoying" at hotel Grand Palace.
Sources told Early Times that Centre is monitoring the situation and it may impose Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir soon after the term of the present dispensation led by National Conference ends.
"Floods hitting the Valley have proved to be the last nail in the coffin of the NC-Cong coalition at least in the Valley, which was worst hit by the floods. Government failing miserably to reach out to the flood victims and doing a little to make people aware about the catastrophe exposed government's incompetence," said an analyst.
A few politicians from Jammu and Kashmir , according to the sources, have got it conveyed to BJP led NDA government at the centre that forthcoming assembly elections should be postponed till April to pave way for the rehabilitation of the flood hit victims in the Valley. "If the elections are announced Model Code of Conduct would come into force and it would stop the rehabilitation work," a few politicians are understood to have conveyed it to the centre government.
Sources said that these politicians have asked the centre to dismiss the state government at the earliest and impose Governor's rule in the state so that no one is able to derive political mileage out of the catastrophe which has hit Kashmir.
Sources said that soon after the state government "vanished' from the ground centre took over the charge of relief and rescue operations in flood ravaged Kashmir. "Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami was assigned the job to monitor and coordinate the efforts put by Army and Air Force to evacuate the marooned people and overlook relief operations," they said.
Deputing the cabinet secretary to monitor the relief and rescue operations, according to the sources, was the first step towards taking the charge of the rehabilitation operations in Kashmir. "Centre is waiting for the situation to get normalized before taking the next step," they said.
Pertinently the term of the NC-Cong government is set to end in January 2015 and assembly elections were slated to be held later this year but the floods have washed off all the plans.
Sources said that before the Governor's rule would be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir there is every possibility of Centre asking the incumbent Governor of J&K State NN Vohra to quit to pave way for the new man. "Centre may wait for sometime before taking these steps. Whether the incumbent Governor stays or goes that is not the issue, but imposition of Governor's rule in JK looks inevitable as people in New Delhi are keen on taking the charge of relief operations to ensure that deserving get their due share," sources added.
