Favouritism galore even in supply of water at Migrant Camp Jagti
9/20/2014 11:29:01 PM
Sri Krishan Kaw

Jammu, Sept 20: It may sound amazing but if the people of Jagti Camp of Lane No. 8 were to be believed a glaring example of favouritism even in supply of water to the inmates of Kashmiri Migrants township at Jagti has come to fore where water supply has been restored after over a fortnight followed by heavy rains and floods that lashed the Jammu region two weeks ago and due to which water supply to the camp remained suspended. In habitants of the camp alleged that authorities have failed to supply water to them on priority and need basis. The preference was given to influentials and favourable ones where as non influential and ordinary people were ignored and left high and dry. While talking to Early Times an elderly person Som Nath said, "water has been restored to camp after a couple of days but was given on selective basis" adding, "Lane No. 9 and Lane No. 6 and 7 have been given water once or twice since the restoration of water but Lane No. 8 have been ignored." He further said, "One fails to understand when all of us were equally sufferers then why we inmates of Lane No. 8 were not considered for the equal treatment." Another migrant lady of the same lane said, those who keep liaison with the people at the helm of affairs were given preference while others were subject to suffer at their hands,".
While interacting with a number of people of this lane most of them said that all of us were equally needy and authorities should have maintained one yardstick while supplying water to the camp. As anger is brewing among the people because their bathrooms have been choked and overhead tanks on their roofs have been dried up and they have to carry water from handpumps to upper stories of their blocks which was an uphill task.
It is pertinent to mention here that there are eight blocks in Lane No. 8 viz Block No. 35 to Block No. 42 consisting 192 families approximately where water supply has not been restored till date barring for a few minutes two days earlier for drinking purposes. The inmates raise eyebrows while alleging that it was a delibrate attempt to put the people to hardships otherwise no reason seems to be there to leave this particular lane unattended.
