MENDHAR, Sept 20: A National Conference team, which visited here today to meet people affected by recent rains and floods, had to face embarrassment when angry locals said they had not received any relief from the Poonch district administration. The team members arrived at the Mendhar dak bungalow where they met locals, including sarpanchs, and businessmen. Gursai sarpanch and NC leader Abdul Rashid alias Haji Billoo held tehsildar responsible for inadequate distribution of relief material in the area. "No tent has so far been provided to the people of my area whose houses were damaged in rains and floods. In the name of relief, the sufferers were given one blanket each. Free ration has also yet to reach them," he asserted. Beopar Mandal president Praveen Kumar alleged that 100 burgalries had taken place in the Mendhar shops in the past some time but police had failed to work out any of them. "While police claim to have apprehended two thieves, the third was still absconding," he said angrily. Poonch SSP Shamsheer Hussain, who was also present in the meeting, reacted sharply to the allegation and offered to resign if the claim of 100 thefts in the Mendhar shops was proved true. Deputy chairman legislative council said common people in the area had been complaining of not getting the relief. NC leader and minister Ajay Sadotra, who was also present there, asked Poonch DC M H Malik to provide free ration to the rain and flood-affected people by latest by tomorrow. |
