SRINAGAR, Sep 21: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) entrusted with the responsibility of dewatering the summer capital of state after the recent flood is perfectly providing relief to the 'influential' people while as no heed whatsoever is paid to the dewatering of the areas where the VIPs don't reside.
A group of people told Early Times that SMC has established dewatering pumps at the residences of ministers, legislators and bureaucrats while the general public has been left to feel the heat. This group of people said that common masses are finding it extremely difficult to come to grips as the accumulation of flood water is posing problems on multiple fronts.
"It is a pity for the state government and its machinery that people living in the submerged areas are yet to get relief from the water logging. Despite the advisories to clean the areas from flood water the government is yet to awake to the situation. This has virtually led to huge gulf between the people and the people at helm," said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Abi Guzar.
Aslam said that had SMC erected some dewatering pumps in the Lal Chowk and adjoining areas the situation would have been entirely different. He said once the areas are dewatered then the life can come back to normal in these areas that have suffered a huge brunt due to the recent devastating flood.
"Lal Chowk is considered to the heart of Kashmir but this heart is bleeding over the past 18 days now. The concerned people are doing nothing to suggest that they are serious in making the heart of valley free from flood water. The government higher ups should be ashamed and they should keep their heads down in shame," said Mohammad Ayub, a shopkeeper.
Ayub said that once the dewatering is complete then only affected shopkeepers and businessmen would be able to assess the exact extent of the damage caused to them by the recent flood. He said continuous water logging in the commercial areas of Srinagar is adding to the miseries of the business class.
"We may be able to save or retrieve some of our goods if the shops are cleared of the flood water. But that has not happened so far and as such we continue to incur losses. It seems ministers and bureaucrats are more concerned about their own residences. They are least concerned about the dewatering of areas where common people live and SMC is perfectly dancing to the tunes," said Hilal Ahmad, a shopkeeper.
At the same time authorities of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar today voiced strong concern over the alleged lackadaisical attitude of SMC in cleaning the premises of radio station following the recent flood. Officials of Radio Kashmir, Srinagar said that despite repeated requests the corporation did not depute any person so that the radio station is cleaned and made free from the dirt and muck.
It would be in place to mention here that important commercial areas like Lal Chowk, Abi Guzar, Regal Chowk, Maulana Azad Road, Exchange Road, Palladium Lane, Residency Road, Ghanta Ghar, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Gaw Kadal, Aftab Market, Court Road, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, Kursoo Rajbagh, Suthrashahi, Magharmal Bagh, Sarie Bala, Hari Singh High Street, Jehangir Chowk, Exhibition Crossing, Hazuri Bagh, Lal Mandi and Wazir Bagh continue to be inundated with flood water.
At the same time areas like Bemina, Qamarwari, Hilalabad, MIG Colony, HIG Colony, Hamdania Colony, Nundreshi Colony, Owaisabad, Firdousabad, Bonapora, Mominabad, Kursoo Padshahi Bagh and Mehjoor Nagar continue to be inundated with flood water.
Thousands of people living in these areas are reeling under severe crisis and there is no plan from the government to provide relief to these affected people. Higher ups of the state government are yet to reach the affected people. Going by the present speed it may take weeks together for the state government to reach the affected people and provide them relief.
