Farmers, breeders at receiving end, need help: Hamid Choudhary | 'Crops, livestock losses enormous' | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 22 : People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Chief Election Coordinator for Jammu Province, Abdul Hamid Choudhary today said that with flood waters still covering vast areas of agricultural land in Jammu and Kashmir State and livestock having perished, farmers including those into horticulture, floriculture or agriculture and dairy farming are at receiving end. Missed summer crops and horticulture produce are all going to have a serious negative effect on family incomes, future availability of livestock fodder and state's economy besides soil conditions also stand adversely affected as fields lie idle and wet. Livestock that survived the flooding due to unusually heavy rains also continue to be at risk, due to feed stock losses, reduced availability of pastureland, and animal diseases. Choudhary Hamid said that government as well as donors might be on the job but there still are villages where even humans have not been provided with adequate food, tents and other articles to survive coming winters. "There is a need to protect livestock and also build shelters for all living beings to face weather vagaries. In addition key storage facilities and infrastructure that were flooded or damaged also needs to be rebuilt, work on which must also be started soon", the PDP leader asserted. There still are places in both Jammu and Srinagar where landslides are putting agricultural land at risk. The government had been claiming that assistance is in the pipeline but it is yet to reach the needy and affected ones. The government must also plans to facilitate provision of concentrated livestock feed and veterinary medicines to the worst-hit and most vulnerable farms and villages. Promises are not going to mean development, Choudhary Hamid added. While post-disaster needs assessment of losses on war footings, government must also try to mobilise and rope in experts in crops, animal production and health besides soil analysis for revitalising the agriculture lands. Choudhary Hamid said that the way government is functioning it will take years for the affected small-scale farmers to recover from this flood fury. "We need to support the farmers to accelerate the process of recovery and getting back to farming", the PDP leader added. The central government he added also owns a responsibility to assist state agencies in coming out of worst impacts of damages triggered by floods in Jammu and Kashmir. |
