JAMMU, Sept 22: The state Sport Climbing team today left for participation in the 20th North Zone Championship to be held at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur from September 25 to September 28. Selected by the Mountaineering Association of J&K, the team flagged off by Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), Ashwani Sharma this afternoon. The new look team, led by Anil Kumar of RS Pura, comprises of 18 boys and 14 girls in six categories of men, women, boys, girls, sub junior boys and sub junior girls. Sonam Sidharth, a senior climber, accompanied the team as coach while Shawetica Khajuria, a national judge, has been named manager. The state team has been sponsored by J&K State Sports Council. In the upcoming championship, the competitions shall take place at the newly fabricated artificial climbing wall at IIT, Kanpur premises following the international rules. Besides the usual lead and speed competitions, bouldering competition shall also be organized in senior and junior groups. However, sub junior boys and sub junior girls shall compete in Lead climbing only. After the North Zone competition, a 26 member team of IMF North Zone Committee shall be selected for participation in the National Championship at Kolkata in December. "The J&K team, which has lately undergone rigorous training under national coaches, is expected to improve upon its previous performance and at least five state climbers are expected to find a place in the zonal team for the National competition," informed general secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria. |
