Fails to administer them necessary vaccines

Srinagar, Sept 22: Health of thousands of children living in the flood affected areas has been put to risk by the health department since the vaccination of these children has not been done so far. This is despite the fact that immunization is important for the children so that they don't fall prey to different diseases.
Residents of many areas told Early Times that health department has miserably failed in vaccinating the children who have been affected by the devastating flood. The residents alleged that health department is just making claims about the vaccination and doing nothing to suggest that they are really serious in this respect.
"Our area has been badly hit by devastating flood and the flood water is yet to be dewatered. At the same time no team of the health department has visited the area in order to immunize the children falling within the age group of 0-15 years. One wonders when the team would arrive and there are apprehensions it might be too late," said Ashiq Ahmad, a resident of Nundreshi Colony of Bemina area.
Ashiq said that no health team has visited Nundreshi colony A, Nundreshi colony B, Owaisabad, Shamasbad, Hamdania colony, Khomeini Chowk, Durbal, HIG and MIG colonies of Bemina area so far. He said that thousands of children living in these areas are vulnerable to various diseases since they have not been vaccinated so far.
"We have been listening from various quarters that vaccination of children living in the flood affected areas is imperative. However, on ground no action whatsoever has been taken so far and children continue to be vulnerable. This speaks volumes about the seriousness of the present dispensation and they have failed on this front as well," said Aijaz Ahmad, a resident of Rajbagh.
There is yet another challenge that the health department is facing and that is in the form of migration of children from flood affected areas to the safer areas. There are many children who after passing many days in their houses falling in flood affected areas had to shift to relief camps or their relatives' houses.
"Need of the hour is that a survey is carried out by the Government in order to get information about the children who moved out of the flood affected areas to safer areas. This can lead to a direction which can be followed by the concerned stakeholders so that each and every child is vaccinated and thus their lives are saved. Strangely this idea has not struck the people at the helm," said Younis Ahmad, a resident of Karan Nagar.
Arshad Ahmad, a resident of Bemina said that he is quite worried over the safety of his children since they passed few days at their home in flood and then shifted to their maternal home. He said clear directions from the health department are missing and as such health of scores of children is being jeopardized.
"For five days and equal number of nights my children could not move out as the flood hit our area in a grave manner. Somehow, I managed to shift them along with their mother to their maternal home located at Rawalpora. I am not sure whether to vaccinate my children or not. The health department is silent over this issue and one wonders when they will break their silence," said Arshad.
Some of the parents have started taking their children to private clinics for vaccination even though the injections are costing them dearly. This group of parents says that they cannot compromise with the health of their children and would vaccinate them whatever maybe the cost in this regard.
