Political, Social activists urge Election Commission to defer Assembly polls in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 23 : Several social and political activists have requested the Chief Election Commission of India (ECI) to announce deferment of the Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir for an indefinite period following the reconstruction of the basic infrastructure in the flood ravaged state. As per reports these social and political activists, besides leaders of trade and industry, have suggested to the Election Commission of india (ECI) to postpone the election in view of the unprecedented floods that have ravaged and destroyed the basic infrastructure in the state and resulted in the death of over 305 people. The Election Commission has been informed that though the flood waters have receded but there is a lot of work to be done for providing relief to the affected people, arrange for their rehabilitation and take in hand measures needed for reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure. The Commission has been informed that it may even take about a year for the reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure to take upon the track, which includes about 10,000 residential houses, several bridges, washed away roads, school and college buildings. Leaders of trade and industry have conveyed to the Commission that the state may have suffered losses to the tune of over Rs one lakh crore in sectors of houses, industry, agriculture, horticulture and business establishments. Since the weather related problems are to grip the Kashmir valley and parts of the hilly areas of Jammu region the Government and its agencies should be told to carry out relief and restoration work on war footing. In case the elections were not postponed the Government agencies would remain busy with making arrangements for an incident free election which could divert their interest from relief and restoration and rehabilitation work. The Commission has been suggested to fix the schedule for the Assembly poll somewhere after the end of the winter season and the Commission should have no hesitation in doing so even if the state has to be placed under the Governor's rule. |
