A fortnight after floods, Govt awakes | | | Sandeep Bhat
Jammu, Sept 23 : A fortnight after floods caused devastation across the state, the government is beginning to show signs of waking up. The housing minister Raman Bhalla has sanctioned Rs 70 crore for channelization of Landoi Choi Nallah in Jammu which include the construction of new secondary drains in Trikuta Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Digiana Ashram, Dashmesh Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Gangyal and the new project will be handed over to economic reconstruction agency for early start of works. The channelization of work will start in the month of October this year. Early Times talked to many people on the ministers initiative. Harbans Kumar, resident of Gangyal said that this initiative should have been taken much earlier and now government is taking, we welcome it and hope the channa-lization work will start soon. The recent floods have created havoc in both the regions of the state and has damaged the very basic infrastructure which will take years together to rebuild. Rita, from Trikuta Nagar said that the minister who is also a legislator of our area has taken good initiative and it is a welcome step taken at right time.The nullah small and big should be channelized at all levels and the recent floods should be taken as a warning from the nature. Mohammad Ayub, a property dealer of Channi Kamala was of the view that people have themselves encroached the nullahs and are responsible for the nature's fury, it is our prime duty to remove encroachments and give way to flood waters through nullah to move, he said and added that better late than never, if government has taken this initiative, it should be welcomed by one and all and people also should cooperate with the government. |
