First corneal transplant surgery conducted at SKIMS

Srinagar, Sept 29: The department of Ophthalmology , SKIMS Medical College Bemina achieved the distinction of becoming the first center in Jammu and Kashmir to start the corneal transplant surgery.
According to press release, a free camp on corneal diseases which was conducted on Saturday from 10.00 Am - to 2.00 P.M, the team of experts from SKIMS Medical College Bemina comprising Dr. Riyaz Untoo, Dr. ShiekhSajjad, Dr. Imtiyaz Ahmad, Dr. Nusrat Shaheen and experts associated with Dera Sacha Sauda , Haryana, Dr. Aditya Insaan successfully operated two patients for the said procedure.
Director SKIMS and Principal Medial College Bemina, Prof. Showkat Ali Zargar congratulated the whole team for successfully conducting the first corneal transplant surgery in J&K. This is a big achievement and SKIMS will conduct such surgeries on regular basis which will benefit the blind patients in need of corneal transplantation.
The corneas were airlifted from Haryana and SKIMS is making MOU with the Dera Sacha Sauda , Haryana for future course, he added.
