Memorandum of losses prepared, floods claimed 280 lives: CS | Govt to seek Rs 1,00,000 Cr from New Delhi | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Sept 29: The State Government has proposed a memorandum of losses amounting to Rs. 1,00,000 crore which would be send to the central government in coming days so that relief and rehabilitation process could be started as soon as possible. This was stated by the Chief Secretary, Iqbal Khanday while addressing a press conference here today. Sharing details, Khanday said that recent floods caused colossal damage to the public and private property and claimed around 280 lives. He said that memorandum of losses would be sent to the Central Government soon. "A total of 5,642 villages were affected by the floods out of which 800 villages remained submerged for more than two weeks and 12.50 lakh families were directly or indirectly affected by the floods," he said. He said lakhs of people were rescued by various government agencies, including the Army, Air force, NDRF and the state administration, private property suffered heavy damage during the devastating floods across the state. "83,044 concrete houses were damaged completely while 96,089 houses were damaged partially and 21,162 semi-concrete houses were completely damaged and 54,264 such houses suffered partial damage and other structures including granaries damaged in the floods numbered around 353,864," he said adding "livestock including 10,050 milch animals, 33,000 sheep and goats." He said that damage to the crops has been assessed to Rs.4,043 crore while horticultural crops suffered losses amounting to Rs.1568 crore and a total of 6.51 lakh hectares of land were affected by floods also. He added that damage to the public utility services and infrastructure, including roads, electric power supply, water supply schemes, have been estimated at Rs.3,000 crore and added that these were initial estimates of the damage caused and multi-disciplinary teams were working overtime to arrive at the final figures and the process is still on at many places. Chief Secretary claimed that 90 percent electric supply has been restored across the state while as 3,000 km of roads have been re-structured so far out of the 6,000 km damaged by the floods across the state and added that despite huge damage to health sector, all including major Hospitals in the Srinagar are functioning. |
