Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 30: That newspapers, intellectuals and the common people in Pakistan are convinced that the Indian Prime Minister,Narendra Modi overshadowed Nawaz Sharif in all sectors of diplomacy and articulation of ideas during Modi's visit to the US.It was for Nawaz Sharif a brief visit which he utilized on delivering his lack-lustre speech at the UN General Assembly, and later had a meeting with the World Bank President from whom he extracted a commitment for granting financial assistance for meeting energy crisis and for carrying out relief and rehabilitation work in areas that were hit by severe floods
It was simply he came,he saw, he spoke and then left story for Nawaz Sharif Against this Modi spent five days during which he conquered the mind of the NRIs and the American people if not the USA.Whereever Modi visited it was just the story of Modi storming the UN General Assembly, the Madison Square, the Manhattan and other segments of New York and Washington.and when it comes to his speech at the UN General Assembly it was far better and superior in content and tone to Nawaz Sharif's listless attempt at raking up the Kashmir issue.
And some Pakistani newspapers have admitted that Modi reduced Nawaz Sharif to insignificance. Modi's speech at the UN was everything his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif's was not, said a Pakistani daily .An editorial "Modi at the UN" in the Daily Times said: "Modi continued his charm offensive in the west with a speech to the UN General Assembly that was everything Nawaz Sharif's was not." Modi began with a quaint reference to India's ancient Vedic culture, a running theme in his speech. He took the opportunity following this to rebut Nawaz Sharif's speech from the day before.
Modi was correct of course; the General Assembly is no longer a platform for serious discussion, it is a way for heads of state to build an image for their country and themselves," said the editorial. It noted that Modi's speech, with its references to Indian spiritual traditions was "written for the US public to consume, while Sharif's bland, narrow focus was everything that western publics feel is wrong with Pakistan - an obsession with India, desire for territory and a total lack of charisma and likeability".It went on to say that the Indian Prime Minister's speech did not focus on Pakistan except by implication. Pakistani newspapers have made a references to India's large population, a way to position India as a major global market...Climate change and poverty eradication, alongside terrorism, made up Modi's three main talking points. This is a credit to Modi's political acumen that he understands how important western public opinion is to shaping policy.
"India's insistence that Kashmir is a 'non-issue' bilaterally reflects Pakistan's continuance of supporting jihadi proxies to achieve strategic goals. Workable solutions exist and have been discussed but Kashmir remains unresolved, while Pakistan's support for proxies has cost it dearly in lives and money. Neither position is tenable but India's appears less so, partly because it de facto controls the territory. Those who watched him and shook hands in the US working places and conference and convention halls and centres were impressed by his charm.
They had no hesitation in saying that Modi is a charsmatic leader with a sense of purpose, policy, vision and com

mitment. When Modi entered the Madison Square stadium he was greeted with a thunderous applause and his speech made the audience laugh, clap and even cry with his play of words and vivid imagery. Much of what he said the diaspora had already heard - clean India, insurance cover for every Indian, skill development, efficient governance - but it was the manner and conviction which he spoke that attracted the audience.
He also won their hearts when he made some long-sought-after visa concessions that made entry to India much easier for the diaspora.Modi left an imprint on the establishment in Washington,in the UN General Assembly, among the political leaders, policy makers, common people.Against this Nawaz Sharif spent a couple of days without being noticed, without drawing public attention and without being heard. He had come simply to rake up the Kashmir issue but Modi has been in the US for signing various deals and for inviting private and Government investment in India.
