J&K excels in NZ Sport Climbing | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 30: Jammu and Kashmir excelled in the just concluded 20th North Zone Sport Climbing Championship at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur by securing six medals, including gold and two silver. Subsequently, on the basis of their performance, five climbers of the state have been selected in the North Zone team for the forthcoming National Sport Climbing Championship to be held at Kolkata from December 4 to December 7. On their arrival, the team was accorded a warm welcome by members of Mountaineering Association of J&K amidst interaction with the officials and medal winners, here today. "The best performance came from Shivani Charak, who became the new North Zone sub-junior girls champion. She effortlessly topped the climbing wall in all the three rounds of the competition and clinched the Gold medal. Nitya Sharma narrowly missed the bronze medal and had to settle for the fourth place. Another climber of J&K Asma Gul, a 10 years old girl, also performed creditably to claim the seventh place," informed general secretary of J&K Mountaineering Association, Ram Khajuria. Much was expected of Shilpa Charak in the Girls category and she raised visions of a gold medal for J&K when she clocked the fastest timing in the preliminary rounds of the speed climbing competition. But she could not generate that speed in the final against Luxmi of Delhi and had to be content with a silver medal. Shiv Preet Pannu of Punjab, a national medallist, secured the Bronze madal. The other J&K girls, Bindia, Muskan and Avantika finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Similarly, in the final round of lead climbing, Shilpa topped the wall along with Luxmi of Delhi and Shiv Preet of Punjab and the result was determined on the basis of time taken to top the wall. Eventually, Shilpa secured the third place behind Luxmi of Delhi and Shiv Preet of Punjab. "Palavi Sharma, the state champion in the women category, was at her best when she opened the account for J&K on the first day of the competition with a silver medal in Speed. But in lead and bouldering competitions she simply faded away against strong climbers from Delhi and Punjab," said Khajuria. However, a short but courageous climber of J&K Mrityunjay Sharma matched the tall and powerfully built Haryana climbers in power and technique but failed to clip the last quickdraw because of his short stature and settled for a bronze medal in the sub junior boys' category. A total, 32 climbers of the state, including 14 girls participated in the zonal competition. Shawetica Khajuria, a national judge and treasurer of Mountaineering Association of J&K and Sonam Sidharth, a senior climber were the manager and coach of the team respectively. The team was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council. |
