Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 30: The security personnel deputed to protect VVIP's including Chief Minister braved all odds to rescue the trapped residents of Shivpora, Sonawar and Indra Nagar on September 7 when gushing floodwaters created havoc in historical Srinagar city.
Eyewitnesses said as the Jehlum bund breeched near Shivpora during the wee hours on September 7 on Sunday, only few odd people were able to move to safer places while hundreds of people including females and children got trapped in their houses.
The Special Security Gurad (SSG) office located near the residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Gupkar Srinagar, where entry for civilians is strictly prohibited was thrown open for the flood victims and continuously for the two weeks the SSG personnel provided not only tents to them but fed them on daily basis.
"We are highly grateful to SSG men. When the whole government machinery was in shambles and higher-ups were in slumber, they came for our rescue," a resident of Shivpora Bilal Ahmed said. The residents of Sonawar said that these local SSG men rowed their
boats in speedy waters and rescued hundreds of trapped residents. "I still remember how during the dead of the night, four SSG personnel rescued two wailing females along with their kids, when none dared to row boats in Indra Nagar," a government employee whose residential house collapsed soon after SSG rescue operation culminated said, adding that all these men came out in fields without having instructions from the top. The residents of Shivpora, Sonawar, Indra Nagar, Dalgate who were camping in Kashmir Nursing Home at Gupkar alleged that not a single official or a politician visited them. "More than 5,000 marooned people were spending their days and nights at Kashmir Nursing Home which is barely few yards away from the Chief Ministers residence, but
nobody from the government came forward to inquire their wellbeing. We spent a fortnight in agony but thanks to the brave and kind people from Nishat, Dalgate and Brein who provided us food and other necessary items," locals said.
