Army contradicts Omar, says threat is very serious
ISIS butchers in Kashmir

JAMMU, Oct 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is at the receiving end because he on October 14 played down the establishment of some ISIS foothold and waving of the ISIS flags in Srinagar. Almost the entire national media, print and electronic, is lambasting Omar Abdullah for his irresponsible statements on the issue and warning him that it was the similar official indifferent and callous approach to the separatist-related activities in the late 1980 in Kashmir which directly and indirectly helped a handful of separatists to play havoc with the Valley and rid it of almost all the non-believers. Many serious political parties too have expressed grave concern over the development of portentous dimension and not taken kindly to the stand of Omar Abdullah on the presence of ISIS recruits/operatives in the Valley and the manner in which they hoisted the ISIS flags in the heart of Srinagar city three times, including in July and October 6. Omar Abdullah had on October 14 described the waving of the ISIS flags as a non-issue, countered those who expressed their concern over the developing situation in the Valley and criticized the media, especially some news channels, saying they were exaggerating things.
An influential section of the media has said: "The Chief Minister must remember that these early signs have to be met with decisiveness, else they can snowball into something catastrophic. We had seen in the mid-eighties how the separatists began first with so-called appeals to the Kashmiri Pandit community to quit the valley, then started to threaten them with dire consequences, and finally unleashed large-scale violence which led to thousands of members of the community to flee their homes and live as refugees in their own country. That situation has yet to be rectified. If only the political establishment of the State had read the early signals correctly, there would not have been the large-scale migration of Pandits from the valley, and there would not have been the consolidation of separatism in the State". It is a correct assessment.
On Wednesday, the Army also put on record its deep concern over the manner in which the ISIS operatives have started their activities in the Valley. It didn't name Omar Abdullah, but it was clear from what the Army said on the issue that whatever Omar Abdullah said had not gone down well with those charged with the responsibility of defending our borders and securing he life of the Indian citizens.
"The waving of ISIS flags in Kashmir valley is a matter of concern and 'deserves the highest attention" of the security agencies' so that the Valley youth are prevented from being lured into the ranks of the jihadist organisation," said General Officer Commanding of the Army's 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha, at Srinagar just a day after Omar Abdullah sidestepped the security concerns and rubbished the appearance of the jihadist group's flags in Srinagar as an act of "some idiot".
Emphasizing that the "ability" of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to attract a large number of volunteers was a cause of worry, Lt Gen Saha said that it was imperative that concerted efforts were made to secure the "right to prosperity" of the youth in the valley if they were to be kept away from the path of terror. "The ability of ISIS to attract large number of volunteers is a matter of concern. There are believed to be 10,000 to 15,000 volunteers at present fighting for ISIS. The fanaticism shown by the fighters is also a cause," he said, and added that media reports about some youths from other parts of the country joining the group were worrisome. "Media reports have suggested that some youths from Mumbai and Hyderabad had joined ISIS. There was even a report about a Kashmiri-origin youth living somewhere else (Australia) having joined," he further said.
Notwithstanding the fact that Lt Gen Saha feigned ignorance about what Omar Abdullah said in New Delhi, he left none in any doubt that the Army didn't share his view and that the time had come for taking all the necessary steps to check the rise of ISIS in the border state.
Omar Abdullah needs to appreciate all the concerns as shown by the Army, the media, sections of society and various political parties and direct his security agencies to neutralize not only the ISIS operatives/recruits but other anti-humanity elements as well. It is his fundamental duty to defend and promote further the country's sovereign interests and maintain communal harmony.
