Omar Govt 'big stumbling block' in JK development: PDP | 'Coming elections would seal its fate' | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 19: A day after Election Commissioner of India (ECI) hinted that the forthcoming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir would be held on time, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today said the present Omar Abdullah led regime in JK has become a "big stumbling block" in the development of the state and rehabilitation of the flood affected people. Talking to Early Times the PDP Chief spokesman Naeem Akther said: "We know that people are trying to restart their normal life after the recent floods but if the present dispensation continues to remain in the office it would add to the miseries of the flood affected people." The PDP Chief spokesman said that Omar Abdullah led regime has failed to handle the situation post floods and it has become a "liability" on the people. Asked did PDP don government's mantle by submitting a detailed memorandum to the Prime Minister about what needs to be done to rehabilitate the flood victims, he said, "People reposed faith in us by giving us mandate at 41 assembly constituencies in the last parliamentary elections. We have just done our bit by sending a memorandum to the Prime Minister," he added. Akther said that state government before sending the Rs 44000 Cr rehabilitation package for the flood affected to centre should have taken all the parties into confidence. "We don't even know what state government has proposed and what it wants," he said. Asked why PDP is keen on holding the elections on time as people are yet to come out of the shock, he said, "The present regime has proved to be a bigger disaster than floods. We are not asking for midterm elections. Only three months are left for the tenure of the NC-Cong coalition to end. More ever, if they continue to remain in office they will make desperate attempts to derive political mileage out of the catastrophe." Another PDP leader said that National Conference has already conceded defeat that is why it's opposing election at this point of time. "They want to buy time for themselves so that they can lay hands on whatever they get in the last 3 months. They know it very well that coming elections would seal their fate that is why they are insisting that elections should be delayed," the leader alleged. He claimed that there are complaints about relief not reaching to flood victims. During the past few weeks we have seen widespread demonstrations against the unfair relief distribution. "This government has to go if things have to be put at place. Otherwise in next three months people at the helm will get a free hand to indulge in anti-people activities," he claimed. The leader said that "frustration" is evident as the Chief Minister is just making announcements which he knows very well would have to be taken care by the next regime. "He (Omar) couldn't do much for people during the past six years. Now he is trying to hoodwink them by indulging in rhetoric and sending proposals to centre," he said. The leader said for six years this government didn't do anything vis-à-vis rehabilitation of PoK and Chaamb refugees at the end of its tenure it has recommended to the centre a special financial package for them. "Omar has pushed the ball in centre's court and he believes that by doing so he can take the masses for a ride." |
