Election Commission addresses NC's concerns, or has it?

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 19: The clarification by the Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath that holding assembly elections on schedule would not interfere with relief and rehabilitation operations in Jammu and Kashmir should remove all the fears and misgivings of those politicians who opposed holding elections on this ground.
There has been a general agreement among most political parties in the State that elections to the State Legislative Assembly should be held on time. The ruling NC has opposed holding these elections on the ground that the conduct of elections would interfere with the relief and rehabilitation process in the State. The ruling alliance partner of the NC has, however, also favoured holding the assembly elections on time.
The assurance from the Chief Election Commissioner that holding the elections would not be allowed to interfere with the relief and rehabilitation operation should set at rest all the fears of the NC, but only if these fears have been because of the party's concern for the plight of the flood victims in the State.
If NC's reasons for pleading postponement of assembly elections are political than nobody including the Election Commission can help the ruling party.
The political fortunes of the NC have been fluctuating since it took office in the State in 2008. The NC has been touching new lows with each passing year and finally it reached its nadir when floods hit the State last month. There is no doubt the Chief Minister personally spent sleepless nights trying to come to the rescue of the people. He also refused to celebrate the Eid because of the suffering of the flood victims.
But, this is not enough for the relief to actually reach the affected people. The NC as a party has not come up to the expectations of the people and its working president and the Chief Minister cannot be absolved of the responsibility because he personally did whatever was in his hands.
The victory and defeat in a war always goes to the credit of the general who leads the army. The responsibility of the people's disenchantment with the State government, therefore, has to be borne directly by the Chief Minister.
Few people deny that Omar Abdullah is a good human being. He has qualities those cannot be denied. He does not allow his political colleagues to bully administration. That goes without saying. But, the question even he needs to ask himself is whether he is cut for the job he is presently holding. Or, whether he has the right team of persons at the ministerial level around him to ensure that his personal image does not take a beating.
As of now, it might be too late to learn a lesson that would do the NC top leadership any good in the assembly elections. Yet, in politics nobody is permanently out. It is always good to learn from one's mistakes even if adversaries have immensely benefitted from such mistakes.
