NC may persuade reluctant Omar to seek re-election from Ganderbal | Piquant situation | | Neha
JAMMU, Oct 19: Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also happens to be the working president of the Kashmir-based and Valley-centric National Conference (NC), is in a fix. He is reluctant to test the political waters this time because he is not so sure of his victory. It was not a normal thing when the NC announced three lists of candidates for the upcoming assembly elections, which didn't include the name of the Chief Minister. It was something very significant in the sense that Omar Abdullah had not made up his mind to contest or not contest the election. There were reports that the members of his coterie or kitchen-cabinet wanted him to seek election from Hazratbal, an Assembly constituency which his uncle Mustafa Kamaal at present represents, as also from Sonawar. These seats were, according to his poll managers, "safe" for Omar Abdullah. The reports to this effect had infuriated Mustafa Kamaal, who had declared that he was very much in the fray. The reports had clearly suggested that Omar Abdullah might not make it to the assembly for the second time in a row if he was fielded in the Ganderbal constituency, once considered a pocket borough of the Abdullah family. It appears the poll managers in the NC have finally come to the conclusion that it would be politically prudent if Omar Abdullah sought re-election from the Ganderbal constituency, which he at present represents. They feel that things have considerably improved for Omar Abdullah in the Ganderbal constituency following the latest decision of the State Cabinet to create more administrative units. A report from Srinagar in this regard has said: "Most probably Omar will contest from Ganderbal. The decision at large within the party is being supported after the floods and the creation of new administrative units. Ganderbal has got a good share of these new units and party believes that Omar enjoys much support from the turf…The 4th list will include Omar's name as well with possibility of him contesting from Ganderbal". But the question is to be asked is: Will the reluctant Omar Abdullah muster courage to face the hostile electorate of Ganderbal? We have to wait for some more days to know what decision he finally takes. |
