Affected families being paid peanuts, un-affected enjoying bounties

Damaged: Rs 1500 per family
Less affected: Rs 75,000 per family

SRINAGAR, Oct 19: While the flood affected people continue to face miseries on daily basis some others who remained untouched or were least affected are receiving bounties with no checks and balances system in place for proper monitoring of the compensation process.
Reports from some villages in Pattan area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district said that the people who lost everything in the flood have been left out. On the other side compensation has been provided to the people who were not at all affected by the ravaging flood.
A delegation of residents of Gund-I-Ibrahim village told Early Times that more than one dozen families affected by recent flood have been left at the mercy of God as they have received minimal relief amount. They said that compensation has been given to families whose houses are intact and haven't suffered any loss whatsoever.
"It is quite an irony that people whose houses got completely damaged in the flood received a relief cheque of Rs. 1500 per family. On the other side the people whose houses are standing and did not suffer any loss received much higher relief amount. These families got relief cheque in the range of Rs. 60,000-75,000 per family and are making merry," said the villagers. The villagers said the other irony is that the unaffected families have been divided in more than one family despite the family being single. They said huge bungling has taken place in the payment of compensation and that the higher ups especially Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Rohit Kansal should intervene in the matter.
"It is a pity that state government is playing politics while paying compensation to the flood affected people. Those who don't deserve the compensation are being paid hefty relief cheques while as the deserving families are being denied the same. This issue should have been tackled on pure humanitarian basis but that has not happened," said the villagers.
The villagers said that houses of Sajad Ahmad Dar son of Ali Mohammad Dar, Sanaullah Rather son of Ghulam Mohammad Rather, Manzoor Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Rasool Dar, Mehraj-ud-din Malla son of Mohammad Akbar Malla, Sanaullah Dar son of Mohammad Ibrahim Dar, Mohammad Abdullah Malla son of Abdul Razak Malla, Ghulam Rasool Hajam son of Mohammad Sultan Hajam, Shameem Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Hassan Dar and Shabir Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Rehman Bhat have been completely damaged in the recent flood.
"The family members living in these houses have been rendered homeless and the state government has added insult to their injury by sanctioning relief cheque of Rs. 1500 per family as compensation. This is highly deplorable and people at the helm should be ashamed of their wrong decisions," said the villagers.
The villagers said that the authorities have shown that houses of Ghulam Nabi Bhat son of Abdul Rehman Bhat, Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat son of Abdul Rehman Bhat, Bilal Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat and Abdul Majeed Dar son of Ali Mohammad Dar have been damaged which is not true. They said these families have received compensation in the range of Rs. 60,000-75,000.
