New administrative units ahead of Assembly elections | Last ditch effort by Omar to keep NC afloat | | Abodh Sharma
Jammu, Oct 19: Whether the results of the Haryana and Maharashtra State Assemblies shall have any impact on the elections in Jammu and Kashmir which are now around the corner may be difficult to preempt, but Omar Abdullah's last ditch effort to galvanize chances of his partymen, especially his confidants to win their seats is most likely to turn into an exercise in futility. Granting, Tehsil at Jandrah, SDM office at Nagrota and Niabat at Shibba and Kathar in Nagrota Assembly constituency, from where Omar's confidant Devendra Rana is likely to contest is especially being seen as Government's desperate effort to propel his chances in the coming elections. State cabinet cleared creation of more 221 administrative units including 9 Sub-Divisions, 50 Tehsils, 99 Niabats and 63 CD blocks following recommendations of panel headed by Financial Commissioner, Industries and Commerce, Khurshid A Ganie. Omar government tried to win public sentiment which is heavily loaded against it by announcing these new administrative units which cover mostly the areas which were allegedly ignored despite eligibility. In July this year, government had ordered creation of 659 new administrative units including 46 new Sub Divisions, 135 Tehsils, 177 blocks and 301 Niabats, but there were angry reactions from many areas which contested government decision claiming better eligibility from many other areas which had got new administrative status. However, many allege that the norms in announcing new administrative units have been sacrificed to political considerations and realizing the public sentiment attached to the issue, the Omar government has tried the last ditch effort, which might not change the fortunes of the National Conference. The desperation in announcing the new administrative units just days before the elections are likely to be announced has been denounced particularly because many of the administrative units announced in July are still defunct and several of them san not only officers and staff but are being run from rented accommodations. |
