Miseries compound for flood affected families with every passing day

SRINAGAR, Oct 20: Accusing the state government of taking the suffering of dispossessed families of flood hit Kashmir for granted the families alleged that their condition in makeshift tents is getting bad to worst with each passing day in absence of proper medication and food amenities.
"It has been almost one and half month since the floods hit Kashmir drastically. Around twenty families form civil lines area which includes Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Lal Mandi, Gogji Bagh and Ikhrajpora are living an extremely deflated life in makeshift tents on main road at Lalmandi as their own houses were completely damaged due to the devastating floods last month although no official from District administration bother to visit us," Abdul Rehman of Lalmandi whose house was also damaged by floods told 'Early Times'.
"We are here with our families since one month with the hope that the Government will take some painstaking measures for our rehabilitation but it has done nothing except for hollow promises so far," he said.
He said that the affected families need support and sympathy in this hour of crises however their complexity has been ignored by the Government.
"Due to extreme cold conditions we spent most of our nights in local Mosques with our families which include large number of children and elderly people. No official so far bothered to visit us nor any relief material was provided by the Government. We are surviving on God's mercy and local groups who have provided us with food medicine and clothing," alleged Rehman.
Mohammad Shafi Sheikh another flood victim said that the condition of elderly people there is getting bad to worst with each passing day as they have been without medical facilities. "This could happen with anyone be it Mantri or a Bureaucrat but the way they have dealt with the situation seems that they are much concerned for their own interests rather than addressing the sufferings of flood hit people of Kashmir," Said Sheikh. "We do not want the Government to provide us luxurious houses to live in but temporary wooden sheds so that our families feel safe. Many children and old aged people have fallen ill here and we have been watching their distressful conditions helplessly as we cannot afford two times food for them, providing medicine is a big thing," Sheikh said. He demanded the Government to ensure their safe rehabilitation immediately and provide all basic facilities like food clothing and medicine on humanitarian grounds. "We want the Government to ensure our rehabilitation on fast track basis as winter is approaching our children and elderly people could not live under the plastic tents for whole season," Sheikh added.
