Cop's murder by notorious stone pelters: Omar owes several answers to deceased's family | | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Oct 21: Amidst sops, amnesties and jobs for the notorious stone pelters of Kashmir, a J&K Police constable lost the battle of life after fighting for three months against the fatal injury inflicted upon him by a group of stone pelters in Srinagar on July 29. Would the 'angry youth' be identified and granted amnesty and a job in State police is the question many people are asking as that is exactly what the Omar government has done ever since the stone pelters gained notoriety during the infamous unrest of Summer of 2010. Despite the fact that these stone pelters have injured scores of cops and civilians and damaged public property worth lakhs, vote bank politics has impelled the Coalition government to not only grant them amnesty, but also conduct special recruitment drives for them in the state police. Astoundingly, while many of those who were booked during Shri Amarnath land row in Jammu in 2008 were still facing trials despite assurances from the government to withdraw cases, the notorious stone pelters, responsible for large scale violence in Kashmir were granted amnesty and offered jobs as well. It is also disturbing to know that while hundreds of cases under SRO-43 are pending in GAD, jobs are being offered to perpetrators of violence. In order to appease these perpetrators of violence, the state government had launched an on-the-spot recruitment drive in 2011 in various parts of Srinagar city to increase the representation of the 'youth' hailing from Srinagar city in the constabulary. Those who promulgated amnesty to stone pelters and their recruitment in the state police advocated that the strategy of recruiting constables from the stone-pelting hotbeds would be effective in curbing street protests. The morale of the cops fighting dangerous ding dong battles with the stone pelters in the narrow lanes of the down town is bound to sag as three of those who were arrested after assaulting the deceased constable Waseem Ahmad were granted bail. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased constable would definitely seek to know if they shall be compensated under the provisions of SRO-43 before the accused stone pelter is offered amnesty and a job for killing their bread winner. |
