Omar plays AFSPA revocation card ahead of Polls | Says decline in militancy warrants repeal | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, Oct 21: With Assembly polls round the corner, a desperate Omar Abdullah today sought revocation of AFSPA saying decline in militant activities warranted repeal of the law. He was speaking at the Police Commemoration day function. He said: "Since 2008-2009 there has been reduction in militancy so the NDA government at centre led by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi should take a look at the long pending demand for revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state, earlier the better." He said that after some violent years, there has been gradual decrease in militancy graph over the years and taking 2008-2009 as the base, there has been steep decline in militancy which once had gone up to the mark of 60 to 70 percent. Omar said that 'in addition to many other reasons which we were made to believe with withdrawal of western forces from Afghanistan, year 2014 would be going to be a violent year for Jammu and Kashmir because withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan would lead an increase in militancy in the region, particularly in the state but that has not happened so far.' He said that 'regardless of what happens over the next few months in Jammu and Kashmir, he believes that the central government will take a serious look at the issue of the AFSPA, more so now, given the fact that there has been considerable decrease in violence in the state.' Pertinently during UPA government at centre until recently, Omar Abdullah many a times over the years raised the issue of revocation of AFSPA from Jammu and Kashmir and every time his statement regarding the said matter would reach to the ears of security agencies particularly to Army they would nullify the demand of Omar Abdullah while terming conditions not favorable for AFSPA revocation from the state immediately due to varied reasons. |
