ECI likely to sound poll bugle next week | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 22: Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the dates for the forthcoming assembly elections in the state in the coming week. Sources told Early Times that the ECI after assessing the situation in both Srinagar and Jammu has conveyed its decision of holding elections on time in the state to Ministry of Home Affairs. "The ECI has ruled out the possibility of postponing the elections in the flood hit state," they said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while addressing a function organized by the Army to conclude operation Fallah at Tosamaidan in central Kashmir's Budgam district today hinted that assembly polls would be held on time. On Tuesday Omar while addressing a Police Commemoration Day at Zewan on city outskirts here had asked the Police to be prepared for the polls. Sources said, "Top government officials, including administrative secretaries of the key departments were summoned to Secretariat here today to clear the pending files in view of the reports of the announcement of poll dates next week." As the term of the current J&K Assembly ends on January 19 next year and, if the electoral process is not completed before that, the state would have to be placed under Governor's rule. Pertinently, General Administration Department (GAD) had received a communiqué from ECI on Tuesday asking it to dispose off pending files before the weekend. |
